“INSIDE BEAUTY” — a solo exhibition by French artist Eric Borel, working in the aesthetics of fantastic realism. The exhibition is dedicated to portraits of contemporary Kazakh women, reinterpreted through the visual traditions of Flemish painting and the Northern Renaissance.
Eric Borel was born in 1964 in Cameroon and lived in several African countries, in the United States, and in other parts of the World before returning to France, where he resided until the early 2000s. He is currently based in Kazakhstan, where he is working on portrait paintings.
When an artist paints portraits, he scans the visual and mental matrix of a person, passes it through the filters of his perception, and creates an emotional imprint. Eric Borel, bearer of an ancient Scandinavian name meaning “first among the powerful,” is a French artist in love with the beauty of Kazakh women. This love is expressed through the unusual, for us, aesthetics of Western European fantastic realism. Portraits of our contemporaries, reinterpreted through the works of the old masters of Flemish painting and the Northern Renaissance, somehow come together into an emotional visual sequence. Deep and sincere, surreal yet clear. Eric Borel paints beauty. Beauty that must be sought within one’s own soul.
