by Abdrashit Sydykhanov
We are concluding 2025 with a very important project that brings together 50 paintings by the outstanding classic of Kazakh painting, Abdrashit Sydykhanov (1937-2011). Like some other artists of the 1960s, he stood at the origins of the formation of the national art school, developing it to a fundamentally new level. As part of the project, it was important for the curators to show the most unusual stage of the artist’s creative work for the viewer—his late period. This period of “sign painting” (tanba — “sign”) is full of colors, textures, and complex philosophical and aesthetic intertwining.
Born in 1937 in Kulagino village, Guryevsk region. In 1965 he graduated Alma-Ata art college, named after N.Gogol. Since then he regularly participates in various art exhibitions. In 1967 Sydykhanov became the member of the Artists' union of Kazakh Republic. Among other awards and ranks of Abdrashit Sydykhanov are the Honoured Art Worker of the Republic of Kazakhstan, State Award Laureate of the Republic of Kazakhstan, The Honorary holder of the «Kurmet» order, the receiver of the independent «Tarlan» award (2000). Sydykhanov started his creative development in the middle of the 1960-ies. The fame of the «young and talented painter» was brought to him by his artworks: «Tobacco harvesting» (1972), «Sheep bathing» (1971), «Apples gathering» (1973). These canvases found their deserved place in the collection of A.Kasteev State Art Museum.
«This project in Astana is the first major exhibition of a significant period in the artist's work in the 1990s. It reveals not only the significance of the symbolism in Sydykhanov's works during this period, but also a whole layer of Kazakh visual culture, revived through images. In an age when art is searching for new forms and meanings, Abdrashit Sydykhanov's paintings remind us of our roots, of the light that never goes out if it is passed on». Leyla Mahat, The Chairperson of Curatorial Council, «KULANSHI ART CENTER» and Curator of the Exhibition.
